Sgt David Edward Gervase: A True American Hero
Sgt David Edward Gervase is a name that will forever be etched in the annals of American history as a true hero who selflessly gave his life for his country. Born on November 21, 1978, in Waukegan, Illinois, David Gervase was always passionate about serving his country and protecting his fellow Americans.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 2001, David was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On May 26, 2005, David was serving as a member of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division when his unit came under enemy fire during a combat mission in Baghdad.
Displaying incredible bravery and courage in the face of danger, David charged forward to engage the enemy and protect his fellow soldiers. Despite being severely wounded in the exchange of fire, David refused to give up and continued to fight until his last breath.
For his outstanding bravery and selfless sacrifice, David was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, the third-highest military decoration awarded for valor in combat. His citation reads, "Sergeant Gervase's actions on the battlefield are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), and the United States Army."
